SMARTHA SAMBRAMA 2014

19 JANUARY 2014

Shivalli Smartha Brahmana Mahaparishat is the community organization in Bengaluru and the Annual day program was organized at H N Kalakshetra, Jayanagara, Bengaluru on 19th Jan. 2014.

The usual program of honouring the distinguished people,  students who have achieved high scores in the last examinations, ditribution of prizes and mementos and of course cultural program. It was more of social get-together and for meeting like minded people from the community.

The program very much reminded of the days when we used to organize Karnataka Sangha program in Dubaii, those days.

MAKARA SANKRANTI

15TH JANUARY 2014

Makar Sankrāntī is based on the position of the sun. The sun enters the zodiac sign of Makar (Capricorn) on the day of Makar Sankranti. All the tithis (dates) of Hindu Dharma’s festivals vary every year; however, Makar Sankranti falls mostly on 14 January (occasionally on 13th or 15th January). Every eighty years, the difference created due to the revolution of the earth around the sun is made up by pushing ahead Makar Sankranti by a day
.

This is the Suggi or harvest festival for farmers of Kaveri basin of Karnataka. On this auspicious day, young females (kids and teenagers) wear new clothes to visit near and dear ones with a Sankranti offering in a plate, and exchange the same with other families. This ritual is called "Ellu Birodhu. Here the plate would normally contain "Ellu" (white sesame seeds) mixed with fried groundnuts, neatly cut dry coconut and fine cut bella (jaggery).
neighbours visit to give ELLU BELLA
The mixture is called "Ellu-Bella" (ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ). The plate also contains sugar candy moulds of various shapes (Sakkare Acchu, ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಅಚ್ಚು) with a piece of sugarcane. There is a saying in Kannada "ellu bella thindu olle maathadi" which translates to 'eat the mixture of sesame seeds and jaggery and speak only good.' This festival signifies the harvest of the season, since sugarcane is predominant in these parts.
It was not a celebrations as such, but a special day with neighbours visiting and exchanging greetings.

RAMADEVARA BETTA (ರಾಮದೇವರ ಬೆಟ್ಟ)

JANUARY 14, 2014

Ramadevara Betta (Hill) is a Hindu shrine rising more than 3000 feet. Lord Ram is said to have visited here during his 14 years exile. There is a Ram temple at the top of the hill. It will give you an awesome feeling as you approach the hill. It is here the 1975 super hit movie Sholay was shot. This betta is in Ramanagara.
The town Ramanagara is about 60 Km from Bengaluru and we (me, nalini, Ravi, Vidya and Rishi) decided to go for the trip, trek and climbing expedition on Sunday, January 4, 2014,

Left Bhuvaneshwari Nagara, Hebbal, Bangalore at 9am and after having breakfast in one many vegetarian hotels on the way, reached the foot of the hill (about 3 km from the main road)at 11.30am
The hill (Betta) has about 300 nicely laid steps to climb and trees and shrubs on the way. After about 250 steps climb, there is Ramadevara temple, with archak who will do the aarthi to Lord Rama, specially for you.
There are nice resting places with beautiful view around.
Still climbing up to a place with a small ladder and steps on the steep rock to reach a high place and a bit risky too. However, climbers who enjoy, it's an awesome place.

Then there also another difficult place with with narrow path and lot of thorny plants, It's very risky and one has to be careful to go on the trek along this path. However, Mom, ravi and rishi made it.

Rest is the climbing down, apparently will not take much time.
Next was the popular place to have food .... KAMAT'S LOKA RUCHI.....on the main road to Mysore....
It was nice and pleasant, enjoyable trip.
