ಧರ್ಮ ಯುದ್ಧ - ಡಾ. ನಾ. ಮೊಗಸಾಲೆ 

ಡಾ. ನಾ. ಮೊಗಸಾಲೆ ಯವರ "ಧರ್ಮ ಯುದ್ಧ",  213 ಪುಟಗಳ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಕೃತಿ.  ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಮೊಗಶಾಲೆಯವರು 10/6/2020 ರಿಂದ 9/7/2020 . ಅಂದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ  ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ  ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ಕೃತಿ. ಇದೊಂದು ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಕರಾವಳಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯ ಬಹುದಾದ ವಸ್ತುವುಳ್ಳ ಕೃತಿ. 

ಸುರಪುರ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಗುಡ್ಡೆ (Hill) , ನಂತರ ಇದನ್ನು "ಪಂಜುರ್ಲಿ ಗುಡ್ಡೆ"  ಎಂದು ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ತರು ನಂಬಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಸೂರಪ್ಪನ ಮನೆಯ ಬಾವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ಕರಿ ಬೆಕ್ಕುಗಳು ಬಿದ್ದ ಘಟನೆಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾದ ಕಥೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಮಜಲುಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ, ಪಂಜುರ್ಲಿ ಗುಡ್ಡೆಯ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ದಿ, ಜನರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಮೂಡ ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಒಳಸುಳಿವು, ಆಷ್ಟ ಮಂಗಳ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಕಳಶ, ಜನರ ಶ್ರಮದಾನ,  ಇನ್ನೂ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಬಂದು ಕಥೆ ಮುಂದುವರಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.

ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಪ್ರತಿಷಿತ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಜಯರಾಮ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆ, ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಶೇಶಪ್ಪ, ಇನ್ನೋರ್ವ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಕೋಟೆಯವರು, ವೆಂಕಪ್ಪ ಮಾಸ್ತರು, ರಾಗು, ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿಯಾದ ಸುಕುಮಾರ (ಸುಕ್ಕ, ಸುಕ್ಕಅಣ್ಣ), ಕೇಳು ಪಂಡಿತರು, ಪೊದುವಾಳರು, ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತ ಭಟ್ಟರು, ತಂತ್ರಿಗಳು, ಇನ್ನೂ ಹಲವಾರು  ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ಓದುಗರ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. 

ಭೂತಾರಾಧನೆ, ಆಷ್ಟ ಮಂಗಳ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಕಳಶ, ವೈದಿಕ, ಅವೈದಿಕ ಆಚಾರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು, ಜನರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಸಣ್ಣ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಗುದ್ದಾಟ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಮೊಗಸಾಲೆಯವರು ಬರೆದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಗೆದ್ದ ದೊಡ್ಡಸ್ತಿಕೆ - ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಪರಿಚಯ

ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಲಿಕೆ. 

ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆ ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಲಿಕೆ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನದೊಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ. 

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಆರ್. ಟಿ. ನಗರದ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆ, ಕಾರಂತರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ. ಈ ಮಾಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯರಾಮ ಸೋಮಯಾಜಿ ಅವರು ಕಾರಂತರ "ಗೆದ್ದ ದೊಡ್ಡಸ್ತಿಕೆ " ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಅವಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಬಿರ್ತಿ, ಸಾಲಿಕೇರಿ ಮೂಲದ ಜಯರಾಮ ಸೋಮಯಾಜಿಯವರು ಎಮ್ ಎಸ್ಸಿ ಪದವೀಧರರು. ಅಧ್ಯಾಪನವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಅನೇಕ ದಶಕಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಪೂರೈಸಿದ ಇವರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿ 15 ವರ್ಷ, ನೈಜೀರಿಯಾ, ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು 24 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ದುಬೈನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದವರು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಕೋಶಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಜಯರಾಮ ಸೋಮಯಾಜಿ ಅವರ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಓದೂ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ

ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತರು, ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಲೋಕದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಹೆಸರು. ಅವರ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಂಭವಾದ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಆರ್. ಟಿ. ನಗರದ 'ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆ', ಕಳೆದ ಮೂವತ್ತೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸದ್ದಿಲ್ಲದೇ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿರುವ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ತರಳಬಾಳು ಜಗದ್ಗುರು ಶ್ರೀ ಶಿವಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಮಹಾಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಶುಭಾಶೀರ್ವಾದಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕವಿ ಜಿ. ಎಸ್. ಶಿವರುದ್ರಪ್ಪನವರಿಂದ 1993 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆಗೊಂಡಿತ್ತು. ನಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳಾದ, ಎಸ್ ಎಲ್ ಶೇಷಗಿರಿರಾವ್, ವೆಂಕಟಸುಬ್ಬಯ್ಯ, ಯು. ಆರ್. ಅನಂತಮೂರ್ತಿ, ಹಾ. ಮಾ. ನಾಯಕ್, ನಿಸಾರ್ ಅಹಮದ್ ಕೆ ಸತ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ, ಜಯಂತ ಕಾಯ್ಕಿಣಿ, ಎಸ್. ಆರ್. ವಿಜಯಶಂಕರ, ಎಂ. ಎಸ್ ಆಶಾದೇವಿ, ಲಲಿತಾ ಸಿದ್ಧಬಸವಯ್ಯ ಹೀಗೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಲೋಕದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆ, ಕಾರಂತರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಅವಲೋಕನವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ನಾಡಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ, ಕಿರಿಯ ವಿಮರ್ಶಕರು, ಕವಿಗಳು, ಕತೆಗಾರರು ಕಾರಂತರ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಆ ಮೂಲಕ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು, ಹೊಸ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ಕಾರಂತರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತೆ ತಲುಪಲಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮಹದಾಸೆ ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ ವೇದಿಕೆಯದು.

ಮಾಗಧ- ಕಾದಂಬರಿ 

ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸಹನಾ ವಿಜಯಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರ  ಅಶೋಕ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿಯ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ "ಮಾಗಧ " ವನ್ನು ಓದಿದ್ದಾಯಿತು. ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಯ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿತ್ತು.

770 ಪುಟಗಳ ಬೃಹತ್ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು  ಮಗಧ ಸಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ "ದೇವಾನಂ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿ ರಾಜ ಅಶೋಕನ" ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಕಥೆಯು ರೋಚಕವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ರೂ 915 ಗಳ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಂತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖರೀದಿಸಿ, ಸಹನಾ ವಿಜಯಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಹೊತ್ತು ಸಂವಾದ ವನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು.

ದಂತಪುರದ ಬುದ್ಧ ಬಿಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಕಥೆಯು ತುಂಬಾ ವಿವರವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರಸವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗಧದ ರಾಜ ಅಶೋಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಳಿಂಗದ ರಾಜ ಗುಣಕೀರ್ತಿ ಯೊಡನೆ ಸಂವಾದದ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಆವರಿಸಿ ಕೊಳ್ಳುತಿತ್ತು .

ಶತಾವಧಾನಿ  ಡಾ. ಗಣೇಶ್ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಬೆನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಂತೆ " ಸುಧೀರ್ಘವಾದ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆವರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಹಲವು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಹನಾ ಅವರದೇ ಸೃಷ್ಠಿ. ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರ ಸತ್ಯ ವಿಮುಖವಲ್ಲದ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ದಿ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತಿದೆ"

ಸಹನಾ ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ಸುಮಾರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಶ್ರಮ ವಹಿಸಿ ಬರೆದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.

"ಮಹಾಪತನ" - ಸಂತೋಷಕುಮಾರ ಮೆಹೆಂದಳೆ  

ಸಂತೋಷ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಮೆಹೆಂದಳೆ ಅವರ, 374 ಪುಟಗಳ  "ಮಹಾಪತನ" ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.

ನಾನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿಧಾನವಾದ ಓದುಗ, ಹಲವು ದಿನಗಳೇ ಕಳೆಯಿತು, ಆದರೂ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಸುಯೋಧನನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕನಿಕರ, ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ, ಗತ್ತು, ಗಾಂಭೀರ್ಯ, ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಆತ್ಮ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ, ಎಲ್ಲದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೌರವ ಉಂಟು ಮಾಡಿತು.

"ಸುಯೋಧನನ ಆತ್ಮ ಕಥನ" - ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಸುಯೋಧನನ ಬಾಲ್ಯ ಜೀವನದಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಸುಯೋಧನನ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಜೀವನ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯನ್ನೇ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ದ್ರೋಣಚಾರ್ಯರ ಗರಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಬ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಗಿಸಿ, ಸುಯೋಧನ ಒಬ್ಬ ದಕ್ಷ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರನ ಗುಣಾವಳಿಗಳನ್ನ ಹೊಂದಿ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಹಿಂದಿನ ರಹಸ್ಯಗಳೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನ ಲೇಖಕರು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕೃಷ್ಣ, ಬೀಷ್ಮ, ಯುದಿಷ್ಠಿರ ಇವರುಗಳ ನೀತಿ ಅನೀತಿಗಳೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನ ಬಯಲಿಗೆಳೆಯುತ್ತ ನಾನೊಬ್ಬ ದಕ್ಷನೆಂದು ಸುಯೋಧನ ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ .
ನೇರ, ನಿಷ್ಠುರವಾದಿ ,ಹಾಗೂ ಛಲಗಾರನಾಗಿ, ಕೊನೆ ಉಸಿರು ಇರುವವರೆಗೂ ಪಾಂಡವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಡುವ ಸುಯೋಧನನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವವನ್ನ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮೆಚ್ಚಲೆ ಬೇಕು. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಕರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಯೋಧನನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರುವ ಸ್ನೇಹಪರತೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಆಗಾಧವಾದುದ್ದು

ಮಾವ ಶಕುನಿಯ ಕುಯುಕ್ತಿ, ಸೇಡಿನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಕುರು ವಂಶವನ್ನೇ ನಾಶವಾಗಿರುವ ಕಥನ, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಾದಾಗ,  ಮಹಾರಾಥಿಗಳದ ಭೀಷ್ಮ, ದ್ರೋಣ, ಕರ್ಣ, ಶಲ್ಯ ಇವರುಗಳ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣ  ಹದಿನೆಂಟು ದಿನಗಳ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಯುದ್ಧ ಎಂದು ಮರುಕೆ ಪಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ವಾಸುದೇವನಿಂದ (ಕ್ರಷ್ಣ) ಹಿಡಿದು ಧರ್ಮಜ, ಭೀಮ , ಅರ್ಜುನ ಪಾಂಡವರೆಲ್ಲ ಮೋಸದ ಯುದ್ಧವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಕರು ವಂಶವನ್ನು ನಾಶ ಮಾಡಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಬೆನ್ನುಡಿ 

ತಾನು ಕೊನೆ ಉಸಿರು ಎಲೆಯುವಾಗಲೂ ತನ್ನ ಛಲವನ್ನು ಬಿಡದೇ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಾಮನನ್ನು ಸೇನಾದಿಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಯುದ್ಧವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಲು ತಿಳಿಸುವುದು, ಪಾಂಡವರ ನಾಶವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವುದು ದುಖಕರವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಆಯ್ತು.

ಅದೊಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಅನುಭವ. ಮೆಹೆಂದಳೆ ಅವರು ಅಸ್ಟೊಂದು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಪುಟವಾಗಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 

4 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಕದಂಬರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ ಬನವಾಸಿ (ವೈಜಯಂತಿಪುರ) ಯ ಕಥನ.

ಓದುವಾಗ, ನಾವೇ ಆ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆ ನೋಡುವಂತಿದೆ.

ವೈಜಯಂತಿಪುರದ  ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ವರ್ಣನೆ, ಯುದ್ಧದ ಭಯಾನಕ ದ್ರಷ್ಯಗಳು ಮರೆಯಲಾಗದಂತಿದೆ.

"ಓದಿದ ಗಂಡಸರೆಲ್ಲ ಎಂಗಸರಾಯ್ತರೆ, ಓದಿದ ಎಂಗಸರೆಲ್ಲ ಗಂಡಸರಾಯ್ತರೆ"...

Pathetic story medium industry owner Jayakumar, cheated by woman Mangala and finally Jayakumar lost all his industry and also becomes jobless.

Jayakumar and his wife Jayanthi put their money and effort together to build an industry and was doing very well, progressing, becoming international, selling products. They also have a mentally retarded child, slow learning.

Tragedy struck when Jayanthi died in a car accident, and Jayakumar had to run the industry. After some time, his urge for sex made him to take his secretary Mangala home, enjoyed with her without protection, as she said nothing will happen. That turned out to be his costly mistake and got entangled with women liberation group, who forced him to marry her. She blackmails poor Jayakumar and demands all facilities and comforts.

In the meantime there are other issues like University reader Ila madam, having affair with rich politician and exploits him, Jayakumar's wife's brother Nachiket working in US, living together with a woman, leaving him after two years, and again he marries a divorcee and had to give his earning to her as she also divorced him.

Jayakumar, had to spend sometime in lockup due to complaints from Managala as she was treated badly and he was not able to give her sexual comfort.

Indian Laws are very much in favour of women to protect their rights, but it is silent on women who misuse this to their interest and lead a comfortable life.

"UTTARAKANDA" NOVEL DISCUSSION

Uttara Kanda is recent novel written by Celebrity Kannada Novelist, Saraswathi Samman Recipient Dr S L Byrappa. His novels are widely and people look forward to his new novels.

His famous books are "ವಂಶ ವೃಕ್ಷ", " ಗೃಹ ಭಂಗ", ಪರ್ವ, ಆವರಣ, ಮಂದ್ರ, ಸಾರ್ಥ, ದಾಟು, and many more.

Each novel has a unique theme and Byrappa's ability to create the situation and make the reader to visualize the environment is marvelous and simply fantastic. When you read his novels, there is a feeling of your attachment with characters and sympathize or hate.

Discussion about the novel "UTTARA KANDA" was organized by  PriyaDarshini Sanskritika Vedike, SrirangaPattana, at Sharada Vilasa College, Mysuru.

Four speakers Sri Ga. Na. Bhatta, Smt Sahana VijayaKumar, Sm. Asha Raghu and Sri Ajakkal Girish Bhat presented their esaays on  the different issues in the novel.

It was a whole day program with lunch provided (BisiBelebath, CurdRice and Jaamoon and Bhajji), and post lunch session also had question-answer session and closing remarks by Dr S L Byrappa.

The motivation for writing the novel "UTTARA KAANDA" was from a painting of deer, seen at bed and breakfast hotel in London during his tour of England. The Epic Valmiki Ramayana as seen him and translated into novel as seen by him, adding his own version.

We traveled by train the morning just in time to reach the venue by 10 am and we left at 5 pm when the program got over. After visiting Mr Prasads, we returned to Bangalore at 10 pm by train.

ಚೋಮನ ದುಡಿ- ಡಾ. ಶಿವರಾಮ ಕಾರಂತ

The celebrated novel CHOMANA DUDI written by Dr. Kota Shivarama Karanth is 1931 is very heart touching and raises some serious in our society. Untouchable (Holeya), Conversion (Matantara), Landowner's cruel handling of workers (bonded labour), and his strong belief and faith in Hindu Gods. Though at one point he decides to convert and till his own land, he just could not move forward God's place (Pajurli Bhoota).

In "Chomana Dudi" Karanth writes the ambitions of Choma who has one burning wish in his life - to till a piece of land. Choma is an untouchable. Even among the untouchables he is from the group Mari, the lowest among the four groups of untouch-ables. His hut is on the outside of the small village, almost where the forest begins, away from every other house.

Choma is an untouchable bonded-labourer in a village who is working along with his family for a landlord, due to a paltry loan of twenty rupees borrowed from him years ago. Due to his social status, he is not allowed to till his own land, something that he desires most. Though he managed to rear a pair of bullocks that he found straying in the forest, he cannot use them to till the land. He comes in contact of Christian missionaries who try to convert him giving him the lure of the land, but Choma does not want to let go of his faith. He releases the fury that fate has beset on him, by beating his drum.

He has three sons and a daughter; two of his elder sons work in a distant coffee estate trying to pay off the debt. One of the sons dies of cholera and the other one converts to Christianity by marrying a Christian girl. His daughter, Belli works in the plantation and falls for the charm of Manvela, the estate-owner's writer. She is raped by the estate owner, who then writes off Choma's debt. She returns to Choma's home without telling him of the reality. His youngest son drowns in a river, with nobody coming to save him because of him being an untouchable. He then finds his daughter in an compromising position with Manvela. With anger, he beats her and kicks her out of the house. To defy his fate, he starts tilling a piece of land and then chases off his bullock into the forest. In the climax, Choma shuts himself in his house and starts playing the drum till he dies.

Though I read this novel years ago,  still reading now made it very refreshing.

ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯು ನೀನಾದೆ ಮಗನೆ - ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ

Thabbaliyu Neenadhae Maganae - Kannada novel written by Dr S L Bhyarappa, way back in 1968, almost 44 years ago. The issue is making cow slaughter illegal. Even now politicians are politicizing the issue for vote bank. 

The author explores the cultural problems experienced by an American woman, newly married to an Indian, adjusting to Indian norms and customs. Since the beginning of Indian Civilization the cow was considered sacred and was treated as mother. This novel depicts a modern man who studies agriculture in the States, returns to India with an American wife with their different views .The theme is one alienation from the fellow human beings.


ಗೋವನ್ನು ಸರ್ವ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಸ್ವರೂಪವೆಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸುವ ಕಾಲಿಂಗಜ್ಜ ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ಹಾಲು ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಂಸಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುವ ಅಮೇರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿದ ಅವನ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗ ಕಾಳಿಂಗ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಬಿಳಿ ಹೆಂಡ್ತಿ ಹಿಲ್ಡ, ಇವರ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಸಂವೇದನಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ತಿಕ್ಕಾಟವೇ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ವಸ್ತು.
ಪ್ರಾಯಶ ಭಾರತದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಿರುವ ಗೋವಿನ ಹಾಡಿನ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯು, ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕ್ರ‍ತಿಯ ಮೂಲ ಬೇರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನಾಧರಿಸಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುವ ಚಲನ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಂತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಹಿಂದೀ ಅನುವಾದವೂ ಅಪಾರವಾದ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. 
ಇದೊಂದು ಉತ್ಕ್ರಷ್ಟ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕೃತಿ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುವರಿರುವಂತೆ, ಪ್ರಗತಿವಿರೋಧಿ, ಪ್ರತಿಗಾಮಿ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸುವ ತೀರ ಕಳಪೆ ಎಂದು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸುವವರೂ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪ್ರೀತಿ ದ್ವೇಷಗಳೆರಡನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರಚೋದಿಸುವ ಈ ಗುಣವು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಗುರುತಾಗಿದೆ.  


Description of certain events in the novel is simply marvelous .... only Bhyrappa can narrate in such a way that it touches heart of the readers. Kalinga Gowda's son killed by tiger, slaughtering of buffallo's for "bali" to godess, Hilda slaughtering  cow for taking revenge on Poojari Venkatrama are simply hair raising. .....

BOOK - WAITING FOR THE MAHATMA

WAITING FOR THE MAHATMA by R K Narayan, makes a interesting reading. Sriram is twenty. As a mark of his coming of age his grandmother allows his the pass-book to his savings in the local bank, but Sriram is growing up in other ways, too, and an enchanting and unpredictable girl, Bharati leads him into the entourage of Mahatma Gandhi.

These are the opening events in R K Narayan's novel. It is the finest thing he has yet achieved, and his story of the triumphs and tragedies of a raw young zealot in the service of Gandhi is distinguished for its warmth, its humour, its lack of sentimentality and the stamp of absolute truth.

Sriram's evolution into manhood is, for him, strange and bewildering process. Bharati, the girl he worship, is witty, infuriating, capable and, wonder of wonders, condescending to the moonstruck Sriram. Her first loyalty though, is to the Mahatma, a saint blessed with disconcerting common sense, a man whose tragedy is tat he is so much greater than his followers. Most of them accept his ideas enthusiastically, and without realizing it, pervert them to suit their coarser personalities. Sriram is inspired by Gandhi, but he is too easily influenced by glamorous patriots of the type of Jagadish, a terrorist. 

Sriram, waiting for the Mahatma to give approval for him to marry Bharati till the end. Though he gives consent and blesses the couple, he was not there to witness the wedding.

It is a tale of remarkable insight into the upsrge of Indian nationalism as witnessed through the eyes and hearts of Sriram and Bharati, and told with the all genius and compassion we have come to expect from R K Narayan.

BENGALURU BOOK FESTIVAL 2012

Take your pick from a million books

The daily newspaper "THE HINDU" gives above heading for the news item for the event.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the book festival this year, the Bengaluru Sahityotsava is jointly being organised by the Indian Illustrated Classics, Bangalore Book Sellers and Publishers’ Association, supported by Central Sahitya Academy and the Department of Kannada and Culture. This year, over a million books and 50 renowned writers will converge at the festival, which will boast 307 stalls, lakhs of book titles and books in all languages, promised the organisers, at a press conference held here on Thursday. This list includes about 90 Kannada publishers, 150 English publishers, other regional language publishers, developers of book apps and e-books, book portals and online book sellers.

There are large number of books of all titles and authors and other Indian languages thousands of bookworms were busy selecting their choice. It's big opportunity for all book-lovers choose their taste of books. Rishi was thrilled to see some Archies, Tinkle etc.brought home by Mom........says "Nostalgia" , memories of younger days.

ಗೃಹಭಂಗ (GRUHA BHANGA) - ಎಸ್. ಎಲ್. ಭೈರಪ್ಪ

Gruhabhanga, written in the year 1970, depicts rural India of the 1st half of the 20th century through the heroic struggle of a woman against her idiotic, lazy, selfish husband, vicious mother-in-law, superstitious neighbours and pervading poverty. This novel is considered an Indian classic and hence The National Book Trust, India translated this into all the fourteen major languages of India.
Few of the striking features of the novel is the abusive language used by the characters, struggle for life by Nanjamma, the villages and the people suffered by the plague and other diseases.
