SRI SHIROORU MOOLA MUTT -

 Saturday, 6th September 2025

Shirooru, (8Km from Hiriadka,) Udupi.

On the banks of Swrna River, a serene, beautiful village atmopshere, there lies a large Mutt, owned by Shirooru Pontiff (Seer), one of the eight Mutts of Udupi.

Shiroor Matha is one of the eight ancient Hindu monasteries, or Ashta Mathas, in Udupi, Karnataka, founded by Sri Vamana Tirtha, a disciple of Sri Madhvacharya. One of the Ashta Mathas is responsible for the worship of Sri Krishna in Udupi. The previous head of the Shiroor Matha, Lakshmivara Teertha, died in 2018, and in 2021, a successor was appointed, a young student named Aniruddha.

We were there in the evening, when there was spacial pooja "RANGA POOJA", and

lot of devotees converge to the mutt, Parayana, Mangalarathi and Phalahaara.

We were four, Me, mom, sister Vijaya and her son Santhosh. Though it was raining,

Mom and Santhosh went near the river, climbing down the steps.

After the Mangalarathi, and Phalahaara (Bonda, sweet, Paanaka, avalakki mosaranna,

avalakki pongal) we left from the place to Udupi Railway station to travel to Bengaluru.

SRI HOSA MARIYAMMA TEMPLE - KAUP

 Saturday, 16th August 2025

Kaup, Karnataka.

It was on the way back from Mangaluru Saturday evening along with Vijay and her Husband, Santosh (Putta) and me and Mom stopped over at the newly renovated, Magnificent MARIYAMMA TEMPLE.

The devotion to Goddess Maari began in Tulunadu during the 17th century. In 1743, Basappa Nayaka, a notable ruler of the Keladi royal family, constructed a fort named ‘Manohara gadha’ on the Kapu seashore. Additionally, he built a fort in Mallar to provide refuge for his military forces (Dandu). According to local belief, the goddess ‘Dandinamari’ joined the military and settled in Kapu. Interestingly, the name Kapu, derived from the Tulu language, means ‘to wait,’ and to 'guard'.

The word Kaup means ‘to wait’ in Tulu and also means ‘to guaThe word ‘Kapu’ means ‘to wait’ in Tulu and also means ‘to guard’. The British spelled Kapu as Kaup. Kapu has been famous for its landmark lighthouse, which is atop a rock. Kapu has always been known as ‘Hoovina Hitthilu’. Translated, this means a ‘garden of flowers’.

To maintain security and safety, there are many people to guide and help. To eneter the sanctity of Mariamma, long and organized walk round the temple, the idol is simply magnificient.

Lot of donors have donted funds to build new Hosa Mariamma temple and the management has used wisely to make it a very attractive place for tourists and also to devotees.

We spent about half an hour and left from the place to Udupi and then Birthi.
