Shri Krishna Janmashtami Festival, Udupi

Nalini Somayaji traveled to Udupi on the night of Thursday 25th August 2016 to witness the Shri Krishna Janmashtami and VitlaPindi Celebrations, as her sisters are living around Udupi.
Shri Krishna Janmashtami marks the celebrations of Krishna's birth, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who came to earth to cleanse the sins of human beings.
Gokulashtami is celebrated with great pomp i Udupi, the land of Krishna. People observe fast on the day. The scholars chant BhagavadGita, Bhagavatha and other sacred texts. The idol of Krishna is specially decorated as a sporting child. At the midnight, when the moon rises, dishes like chakkuli and Laaduare offered to the idol. Sacred leaves of Bilwa are offered, water and milk are poured with shankha by the devotees. The rituals take place in the morning also on the next day.
Mosaru Kudike - The afternoon is celebration of Shri Krishna Sports, fun and frolics. Large crowd of people witness the MOSARU KUDIKE, where mud pots containing turmeric, saffron water are suspended from the top of wooden poles. People dress like cowherds form human pyramid standing one above the other and using a long wooden stick, break the pots. The idol of Lord Krishna is taken round the car street in golden palanquin (Chariot) Ratha.
Large number of people gather also witness lot of fancy dress parade, HULI VESHA (people dressed like tigers dance to the drum beats on the streets), THATTI RAAYA, YAKSHGANA COSTUME and many more. Watch the video and photos for the glimpse of the procession captured by NaliniSomayaji.
