ST. MARY'S ISALND

OCTOBER 2012

St. Mary's isles are group of islands accessible by ferry from Malpe. Vascoda Gama appears to have touched the island in 1498 before he reached Calicut. The Islands are just a few scattered projections of rock rising out of the Arabian Sea round about Malpe. The northern most island is about a square mile in area and not more than 250 yards in width. It has a coconut garden, which makes it the shadiest isle of the group and gives it a true south sea color.

It is noted for its famous basalt rocks, which have crystallized into columns and split into hexagonal mosaic. Perhaps, this is the only spot in India where basaltic rocks show up such peculiar formations. The isles hold out possibilities of being developed into a holiday resort if only a weekend launch service and tourist facilities are arranged.
From Malpe many fishing boaters provide service of carrying and bringing back the visitors.

It is advised that visitors should carry drinking water and food items with them, as there is no facility at island.
It was Friday, 26th October 2012, we....... mom, Rishi, Shyla, children Anagha and Adithi and Shama reached around 11 am at Malpe bunder and bought boat (Ferry) ticket for Rs 100 each. The launch carrying about 100 people reached the Islands in half hour's time. We had to get into a smaller boat to reach the shore. There were many people, we walked around, spent time on beach, climbed rocks and spent about two hours.

Unfortunately I lost my mobile which slipped off from my short's holed pocket. This i realized only after reaching Birthi, Salikeri at 3.30pm.
Anyway, it was a memorable trip to the island.

SONDA VADIRAJ MUTT

Sonda is small little village in the Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district situated at a distance of around 450km from Bangalore and 20km from Sirsi. It is mostly known as a pilgrimage center due to the presence of three prominent Mutts: the Swarnavalli Mutt, the Vadiraj Mutt and the Jain Mutt. These attract hundreds of pilgrims mostly through out the year. The green surroundings, typical to the Malnad area of Sonda and Sirsi add to the serenity of these places of religious importance.

Shri Vadiraja Theertha was great saint, ascetic, prolific writer and poet, equally well versed in Sanskrit and Kannada, who has left a very deep imprint on Madhva society. Sri Vadiraja Theertha is unique amongst all Madhva saints for many reasons. Shri Vadiraja Theertha was also the first ascetic who after a long life of 120 years, decided his own time of dropping the mortal connection - entered the Vrundavana and left for heavenly life at his own choice of time and place.
The place is about 25 km from Sirsi on the way to Swarnavalli Mutt, on the banks of Shalmala river.

The place is well developed though access road is not so good. When we reached there, it was 1pm when the day's pooja, prasadam are over, as everything finishes by 12 noon. It's a serene, quiet place, guest houses are there and rooms were also available.
We spent only an around looking at natural beauty of the place and returned to Swarnavalli Mutt.

KARNATAKA RE-VISITED: KODACHADRI

OCTOBER 2012

The Kodachadri hill is a part of the Western Ghats and lies in the district of Shimoga. This hill range forms a lovely backdrop to the famous Kollur Mookambika Temple, near which it is located. You can easily access this place from Kollur, thanks to its proximity to the region. In fact, it is considered that the Kodachadri Hill was the original abode of the Goddess, before Sri Adi Shankara had the idol of the Goddess installed at the Kollur Temple. This hill range is part of the Mookambika Temple Nature Reserve.

At the peak it is believed that 'Shankaracharya' did meditation. And to substantiate the same you will find a 'Sarvajna Peetha' at the top.

En route to the peak you will also find a moderate sized water fall deep inside the evergreen forest of Kodachadri, which is called 'Agastya Teertha'.
The peak presents a not to be missed life-time opportunity in the evening as the sun sets in the west. You can also have a golden glimpse of the Arabian sea for a moment.

It was from Sagara, we started and reached foot of Kodachadri hills via Hosanagara, Nagara at 12 noon. From there we engaged a jeep to go up to temple about 10km along rocky mountain on a track road. It took almost one hour journey to reach with bone breaking route. The view is simply beautiful and one    wonders about the creation nature.
It was 4pm when we came down to foot of the hills when we had lunch at one Subramnaya Bhat's house ,It costs Rs 1200 to engage a jeep for ride to top and back.

NAVRATRI 2012 GET-TOGETHER

OCTOBER 2012

During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life. She is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can
say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything.

Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

There was family get-together at Birthi Mane on Saturday 20th Oct.2012 and a grand lunch was cooked by mom Nalini. There were 24 people for lunch..... Doddappa, doddamma, Dinesh-Rekha, Akshay, Rekha appa-amma,  Shubha-Raghu and atte, Shyla-Uday and children, Sandhya-Sadaram, Sandeep, Usha-Suresh from Kengeri, Niranjan and Adarsh.......

MOVIE- ENGLISH VINGLISH

It's Sunday, thought of going to movie with mom and Rishi at IMAX, Mantri Mall. Malleshwaram, Bangalore, night show.
After roaming around the mall for some time, finally landed up at the entrance on the fourth floor.
Movie, caught the attention, did not make me to sleep,  was humorous, and Sridevi's acting was superb.
Hilarious, touching and sensitive, the film is directed by ad filmmaker Gauri Shinde who has done an impressive job as a first time director by bringing a message-driven film without being preachy.
'English Vinglish' is a light-hearted yet touching journey of Shashi, (Sridevi), who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large.
The film whets your appetite, thanks to Sridevi's flawless and seamless performance. She is brilliant in front of the camera.
Also featuring Adil Hussain, Priya Anand and French actor Mehdi Nebbou, 'English Vinglish' is co-produced by Sunil Lulla, R. Balki, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and R.K. Damani.
Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan told us: "The movie is appreciated by media but it got a 5-10 percent opening in Delhi. It might pick up."
But Anant Verma, business head, DT Cinemas, is looking forward to make profits with Sridevi's comeback movie.
"It is Sridevi's comeback movie, therefore people have a lot of expectations from it. Audience has been looking forward to the movie ever since the trailers are out. All our shows have gone jam packed today. Overall DT Cinemas is incurring good business out of 'English Vinglish'."
