IDAGUNJI DEVASTHANA

1OTH OCTOBER 2014
IDUGUNJI

We presumed that Idagunji Devasthana will be a short distance from Sagar, hence thought going for a visit. It was 130 km and two and half hour drive.
Left from Hongirana, Amatekoppa Sagara at 11 am, passed Jog Falls continued driving down in the western ghats, reached Honnavara at 1.30pm. From there, again about 5km along NH17 and a diversion from there about 15km. We reached there by 1.45pm, the temple prasadam was closed and the temple also was closed till 3.00pm
However, we three had a tumbler of payasa as prasada and waited till 3 pm for Darshana of Vinayaka,
Idagunji is a small place in Honnavara taluk, Uttar Kannada district, which has the famous Vinayaka temple. The temple is the main attraction at Idagunji, receiving more than 1 million devotees per year.
Idagunji Devasthana is an ancient temple with a history of more than 1500 years. At the end of 'Dwapara Yuga' great saints were praying to the Sutha-Pouranika at Badarikashrama. Shri Krishna had implied to eliminate the on coming doshas of 'Kaliyuga'. The divine saint, Valakhilya initiated narrating the significance of Kunjavana.

The great saints and Heavenly beings chanted the hymns in praise of Lord Ganapathi. Ganapathi, magnificently attired, was holding “Modhaka” and “Padma” in his hands.
Immensely pleased by the devotion rendered on him by the saints, Ganapathi expressed his desire to grant the wishes of his devotees. The other Gods were cherished and treated equivalently. They also blessed their worshippers. The other Gods appealed to go to their original places. Ganapathi emphasized his decision to stay and gratify the desires of his devotees. He also implied the Gods to leave behind a part of their omniscient power in the various lakes encompassed there.
The devotees can attain their hearts desires by dripping into the varied "Theerthas" and by offering pujas to Him. A lake was bestowed to provide water for bathing at Ganapathi's request. It was named as "Ganeshtith".So according to this purana , Lord Ganapathi stayed in the place Kunjaranya which is now renowned as Idagunji.
This brief summary explains the legendary and historical significance of the sanctity place of Idagunji.
Mhatobar Shree Vinayaka Devaru has been granting the wishes of thousands of people who regularly visit this place from year to year.

WITH SHOBHA AND NALINI
We were at HONGIRANA SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE, near SAGAR, on a visit. That day happened to be Maha Navami and the school was performing Ayudha Pooja for 14 buses and other vehicles and equipments.

As Shobha, my niece, is the head and CEO of the school, my car HYUNDAI SANTRO was washed and kept for Pooja.
The buses, cars and motor bikes were washed, decorated with flowers, pooja was performed by Purohit.
K G Nagesh Rao, Shobha's uncle was present and was actively helping pooja ceremonies.

FLEET OF BUSES

APSARA KONDA FALLS

5TH OCTOBER 2014

We visited APSARA KONDA FALLS on our way back, after visiting Idagunji Mahaganapathi Temple.
The place is very beautiful and we have to walk down about 25 steps, behind the temple to reach the pond. The water is not very clean but height through whch water falling is very pleasant. One can spend about half an hour enjoying, being under the falls.
There are lot of stones in the pond.

There also a small park, and a beautiful view of sunset and the river joining the sea from the top of the hills.
Apsara konda(Apsarakonda) is a small village near Honnavar, town in Uttara Kannada district. 8 kms from Honnavar are the "Apsara Konda Falls" (Pond of the Celestial Nymphs) set in a picturesque setting and a fine beach that offers glorious sunsets.
Legend says that the Apsaras (Heavenly fairies) used to come here to bathe and relax. The place truly exudes heavenly beauty. There is Devi temple and a branch of Ramachandra mutt. There are several big caves on the hillock called ‘Pandavas caves’.With a view of the river, the sea, lthe islands, l;the lush green fields and coconut groves, the Apsarkonda hillock verily offers a feast to the eyes that see.

It was quite a nice attraction near Honnavar, Uttara Kannada Dist.

TYAVARE KOPPA LION & TIGER SAFARI

5TH OCTOBER 2014

We visited Tyavare Koppa Lion and Tiger Safari, 10Km from Shimoga. It was on our way back from Sagar.
It was a last minute decision, since we were already on the road. We spent little more than an hour for safari and walking around the zoo and the park. The entry fee per person is Rs 30, camera charges Rs 50, and the safari is Rs 70

The safari is for an hour. When we entered there was lot of rush, people waiting in the long queue. The safari bus was about to leave and they were looking for three in a group to join. So we bought the tickets and joined the bus immediately.

At Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari, we could witness to the grace, variety, color as well as wonder of nature world plus catch bracing glimpses of Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Sloth Bear, Deer, and occasional wandering birds since they wander around in luxuriant surroundings.
One could also spend an hour in the zoo. The tourism department could do lot better to cater the needs of tourists. Restaurant, gift shops and restrooms could added. However it is very good tourist attraction.

ಬೊಂಬೆ ಹಬ್ಬ (DOLLS FESTIVAL)

We visited couple of dolls exhibition in Bengaluru, which is part of Navratri Festival.
First was at the house of Dance school director,Vidwan Pulikeshi Kasturi at Yeshwanthpur. As the hall is used for dance classes, large number of dolls were exhibited creatively in major area of the hall. The tradition has been carried on from generations and had very good collection also.

Bombe Habba (DOLLS FESTIVAL) is a toy festival celebrated during the festival of Navratri in Southern India, it is customary in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, as well as in some Tamil communities within Sri Lanka. This is an exhibition of various dolls and figurines in odd (usually 7, 9, or 11) numbered tier.

When people come to person's house to see the BOMBE, usually they are given prasad (the offering given to God that day), kumkum, a holy powder and small bag of gifts. In the evenings, "kuthuvilakku" (small lamp) is lit, in the middle of a decorated "kolam"(Rangoli), before the Kolu and devotional hymns and shlokas are chanted. After performing the puja, the food items that have been prepared are offered to the goddesses.
Kolu is adorned with dolls – predominantly with that of the gods and goddesses depicting mythology. It is a traditional practice to have at least some wooden dolls.
On the 9th day (Saraswati Puja), special pujas are offered to Goddess Saraswati – the divine source of wisdom and enlightenment. Books and musical instruments are placed in the puja and worshipped as a source of knowledge. Also, tools are placed in the pooja as part of "Ayudha Pooja". Vehicles are washed and decorated, and puja is performed for them.
The 10th day, "Vijayadasami" – is the most auspicious day of all. It was the day on which evil was finally destroyed by good. It marks a new and prosperous beginning. New ventures started on this day are believed to flourish and bring prosperity. Kids often start tutoring on this day to have a head start in their education.
In the evening of "Vijayadasami", any one doll from the "Kolu" is symbolically put to sleep and the Kalasam is moved a bit towards North to mark the end of that year's Navaratri Kolu. Prayers are offered to thank God for the successful completion of that year's Kolu and with a hope of a successful one the next year. Then the Kolu is dismantled and packed up for the next year.

Another was at Girinagar, at the house of Shubha Ravindra, had good collection of dolls and nicely exhibited.
