MAKKALA YAKSHAGANA

Wednesday, 13 May 2015
GURUNARASIMHA KALYANA MANDIRA, BENGALURU

The occasion was wedding celebrations of Ashwini-Kiran at GuruNarasimha Kalyana Mandira, Bengaluru.... The previous evening was the day for get-together of bride and the groom's party. As most of the assembled people were Yakshagana lovers, a bayalaata was organized by the children of Yakshagana Kendra, Manipal. The prasanga was VEERA ABHIMANYU.
Yakshagana is the leading traditional theatre of Karnataka. It has an unbroken tradition, which goes back to the 15th century. Being removed from the principal seats of power and hidden in the coastal tracts of Karnataka it was one of the last styles of dance drama to attract national attention.Yakshagana brings together stunning costumes, powerful music and imaginatively choreographed dance to create a theatre form that thrills the audience while instructing them in the basics of Indian culture, philosophy and dharma.
VEERA ABHIMANU

After the defeat of Bhishma on the tenth day of the Mahabharata war, Drona is appointed as the commander of the Kaurava armies. Drona proposes to station the Kaurauva forces in a circular formation (chakravyuha) on the next day of the battle. This special formation will be impregnable to anybody except Arjuna. If Arjuna is kept off the battlefield for the day, Drona will be able to capture the other four Pandavas. Pleased with the suggestion, Duryodhana sends the Samasaptakas to keep Arjuna engaged at a distant battlefront.

At the side of the Pandavas, Dharmaraja (Yudhisthira) is worried: who else than Arjuna can break the chakravyuha formation? Then Arjuna's son, Abhimanyu, comes forward and requests Dharmaraja to be chosen as the one who can do so: he learnt the technique of breaking the circular form when he was still inside his mother Subhadra's womb, because he overheard her and Krishna talking about it when she was pregnant of Abhimanyu. Dharmaraja tries to dissuade Abhimanyu from fighting saying that he is too young, but ultimately yields to his nephew's persistent request. Next the young hero goes to Subhadra, asking her for her blessing. Subhadra tries to dissuade Abhimanyu from his mission, but he refuses to listen to her.

Abhimanyu fights his entry into the battleground. He slays Saindhava who is guarding the entrance. Unable to endure the missiles of Abhimanyu, Drona resorts to tricks to defeat him. He instigates Karna to attack Abhimanyu from behind and chop off his hands that hold his bow. Abhimanyu uses the wheels of his chariot as weapons and charges at his enemies. All the prominent leaders of the Kaurava forces—Drona, Karna, Salya, Kaurava, Dushasana, and Saindhava—join hands to attack Abhimanyu. Finally, they succeed in vanquishing him. Abhimanyu is dead. Ashamed of having slain a child in a battle of unequal forces, the crest-fallen Kauravas return to their camps.
Children of makkala yakshagana koota presented the play beautifully, the dance, dialogues and the singing by "Bhagavataru" Satish Kedlaya was superb.

PIKU - MOVIE

Watched on Tuesday 12th May 2015 at PVR Cinemas, The Elements Mall, Nagavara.
PIKU - Movie is a comedy with Amithab Bacchhan (Bhaskor Banerjee), Piku (Deepika Padukone),  architect, daughter of Banerjee are the main charaxtors and of course Rana Choudhary (Irrfan), Taxi service owner, apparently has a subtle love and hate relationship with Piku.
Put a grouchy, old, constipated man, his extremely rude daughter and complaining relatives together at a dining table, and you'd expect some emotional drama and fireworks. At Piku’s table, though, there is only one conversation: on constipation.
The old, constipated man introduces himself simply as “Bhaskor Banerjee, Bangali”. And like a true Bengali, he is proudly critical of anything and everybody. As he puts it, he is “brutal and honest.” So much so that he doesn’t believe in respecting his 30-year-old single daughter’s privacy to ward off a suitor. He bluntly tells the doomed suitor that Piku is “sexually independent”.
The selfish old man, doesn't want his daughter to get married, as he is dependant on her.
The road trip is accompanied by a big wooden chair with a potty hole in the centre. The kissa kursi ka continues with even more fervour as Rana starts impressing the shamelessly khadoos Bhaskor with his own constipation remedies.
This leads to the most remarkable scene between the two actors — Bachchan and Irrfan — with Irrfan at his candid best, performing the idea of squatting at an Indian toilet, but on a bed and suggesting Bhaskor try the same on the Western commode. The ease of the two actors' comic timing is reminiscent of Bachchan in his older Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies, like Chupke Chupke.
Piku presents a very realistic view of a typical Indian family. The film has life as it is, minus any over-the-top idealistic relationships or preachy morals. The film harps on the simplicity of reality, gently tugging on your heartstrings.
An emotionally rich and endearing film, Piku is a heart-warming experience that every Indian who has lived with ailing or ageing parent will connect to. Independent women who juggle their professional and personal lives with domestic responsibilities are likely to identify more with it.
A good entertaining movie and relationships well expressed.

ANOTHER VISIT TO SHRINGERI

Sunday, 26th April 2015

Shringeri is the famous place, where Sharadamba Temple is centre of attraction. This temple and the Goddess radiates lot of energy from within, which attracts lot of visitors throughout the year.
We started of from Udupi at 8 am by with Nalini, Vijaya and Smitha. After having breakfast at Hebri at Badekillayas Hotel, reached Kigga, a small place, which has Rushya Shrangeshwara Temple.
After visiting, we reached Shringeri, a distance of 20 km . Being Sunday and school holidays time, there were lot of visitors.
The new entrance called GOPURA, is being given final touches and the entrance to the temple is through the side doors.
The Sharadamba temple in Shringeri was established by Sri Shankaracharya when he established the Sharada Peetham Matha here. It is a beautiful temple, set in the Malnad region. Shringeri is located on the banks of the river Tunga. It is a famous pilgrimage center and very important for the followers of Shankaracharya.
Sri Shankaracharya was travelling across the country with his disciples. when he reached this spot, known as Shringa Giri, because the hill here was the place of the ashram of Vibhandaka Maharishi and his great son Rishyashringa.
When Sri Shankara came to this place, he saw a strange scene – a cobra had reared up and spread its hood, to provide shade from the hot sun for a spawning toad. He was enchanted by this sight. Saraswathi Devi, who was with him in the form of a young girl named Bharathi, decided to stay here. Adi Shankaracharya also decided to stay here and set up the Shringeri Sharada Peetham, one of the five Mathas he established in various parts of India. It is said he spent twelve years here.

SIRIMANE FALLS

Sunday, 26th April 2015

A beautiful waterfalls near Shringeri has lot of potential for tourist attractions. It's fresh water falling from the rocks, amongst natural surroundings. Five km road from Kigga is not so good, but motorable. One has to walk down about 80 steps to reach the falls. There are changing rooms and one can walk down under the falls and enjoy.
We had to come up after 45minutes at the falls, as it started raining heavily and the steps were slippery to come up. There were lot of tourists, young and old.

Sirimane Falls is located at a distance of 5 km from Kigga near Sringeri, a popular pilgrim center.
Kigga, a small village which houses to beautiful waterfalls. Kigga is about 16 kms from Sringeri. Water from falls feeds coffee estates and paddy fields in the downstream. A moderate entry fee is collected to maintain the walkways and viewpoints. The money collected also supports a small hydraulic power plant which is built adjacent to falls which lights Kigga houses. The entire activity is controlled and maintained by local bodies.
The place is in the process of improving for attraction of tourists.
