TEMPLE VISIT - TEMPLES NEAR TUMKURU

Sunday 29th October 2017

It was just about lunch time we decided to go to Thumkuru for Yakshagana program in the evening at SriKrishna Mandira, Thumkur.

We reached by 2pm to Nagaraj (Sister's son) house and had lunch. The Yakshagana Program was at 5pm, hence we decided to go some temples near Tumkur.

 1. Gulur MahaGanapathi Temple. - is situated about 6 km from Tumkur town on the Tumkur-Kunigal Highway. The place is famous for its unique way of celebrating Ganesh Festival. There is  a permanent idol of Ganesha inside and also Sage Agasthya.

On the day of Vinayaka Chaturthi, the construction of a huge Lord Ganesh begins and is completed by Naraka Chaturdashi. After installing this idol, special poojas are performed for a month and immersed in water at Gulur pond.

2. Lord Chennakeshava Temple, Kaidala - has exquisite temples build by famous sculptor JakkanaChari in 1150. The temple contains some striking images and inscriptions  dating back to 12th century. It has Shiva, Vishnu and Sugata (Epithet of Buddha). In Hoysala Reign, Kaidala was under Nripa Hava and was ruled by a Chieftain Baachideva.

Kaidala was previously known as Kreedikapura, got the name as Jakkanachari got back his right hand after sculpting and establishing statue of Lord Channakeshava at Kaidala with his son Dankanachari.

Nice place and the surroundings.
