KANNADA DRAMA - BEEDIYOLAGONDU MANEYA MAADI

Friday, 9th November 2018
Ranga Shankara, Namma Bengaluru

CONCLUDING SCENE
Beediyalondu Maneya Maadi - is a satirical and humorous play which involves around a young couple. Sripad and Sukanya live in an apartment  in the middle of brahmin dominated locality in Pune, in Maharashtra. They agree that every alternate years they will not celebrate or allow halla-gulla of Ganesha Festival and disturb the sanctity of their home.

The play starts with Sukanya video recording of the festival procession from the balcony of their home, when the husband comes the office. He closes the door and windows so that they will not be disturbed with noise and music of the procession.

From the hometown, Davangere, his relation with family and old aunt arrives. Sripad insists that he will not open the balcony door for aunt to see the Ganesha Festival procession with so much noise. He even  locks the door and instructs them not to open.

The aunt's voracious desire to witness the procession and Sripad's staunch refusal to allow her to do so sets the tone of the hilarious and humorous play. Sripad's nephew Venkatesh, a funny character, and wife goes out and watch the procession and comes back with vivid explanation of various Ganesha idols in the procession.

Sripad's logical, reflective and philosophical rationalizations are balanced by the necessity of the situation, that is both habit and religion driven. The procession approaching tenacity becomes  a baromter for the muted tension and the characters begin to reel and resonate the fallacious arguments of the brigade.

WITH GEETHA SURATHKAL
The procession noise and razzmataz  runs in the background music throughout the play. The neighbor Kulkarni also plays a humorous role. The 90 - minutes play runs slow without much enthusiasm. The stage setting, lighting, and movements of the characters are good.

Madhusudan and Pushpa joined us at Rangashankara.

It was also birthday of Late AnanthNag, film actor and producer. His wife Arundhati Nag was present and sweets were distributed..
