It was on the way back from Mangaluru Saturday evening along with Vijay and her Husband, Santosh (Putta) and me and Mom stopped over at the newly renovated, Magnificent MARIYAMMA TEMPLE.
The devotion to Goddess Maari began in Tulunadu during the 17th century. In 1743, Basappa Nayaka, a notable ruler of the Keladi royal family, constructed a fort named ‘Manohara gadha’ on the Kapu seashore. Additionally, he built a fort in Mallar to provide refuge for his military forces (Dandu). According to local belief, the goddess ‘Dandinamari’ joined the military and settled in Kapu. Interestingly, the name Kapu, derived from the Tulu language, means ‘to wait,’ and to 'guard'.
The word Kaup means ‘to wait’ in Tulu and also means ‘to guaThe word ‘Kapu’ means ‘to wait’ in Tulu and also means ‘to guard’. The British spelled Kapu as Kaup. Kapu has been famous for its landmark lighthouse, which is atop a rock. Kapu has always been known as ‘Hoovina Hitthilu’. Translated, this means a ‘garden of flowers’.
Lot of donors have donted funds to build new Hosa Mariamma temple and the management has used wisely to make it a very attractive place for tourists and also to devotees.
