We visited VaniVilas Sagara (MariKaniveDam) on Saturday, 8th October 2016, along with wife Nalini, daughter Shubha, son-in-law Raghavendra Bhat and grand daughter Lahari.
The dam is about 160 Km from Bengaluru, near Hiriyuru,along ChitraDurga national highway.It is oldest dam in the state built by Mysore Maharajas in pre0independance, across river Vedabathi. The water is used for drinking and irrigation for Hiriyuru and ChitrDurga taluks and surrounding areas.
Construction of dam was initiated by Diwan Sheshadri in 1897 and was completed in 1905.
The place is tourist destination for weekend drive and a popular picinic spot. The historic marikamba Temple also attracts many tourists.
One can go up to top end of the dam and walk down on the dam and reach the lower end near the temple. The place is calm and beautiful.
