RUDRAPATNA - VEENA TEMPLE

RUDRAPATNA - VEENA TEMPLE

We are yet to visit the place

It appears very interesting place. Next time when we go to Hassan, we will visit.

These 12 stone pillars which produces the 12 notes of music are at the Sapta Swara Devatha Mandira or locally known as the “Veena temple”(because of the 70 feet Rudra Veena shaped Gopuram at the entrance) is at Rudrapatna, a small village on the banks of River Cauvery in Arkalgud taluk of Hassan district (about 70 kms from Mysore). The Mysore Maharaja had given the title Sangeetha Grama to this village.

Rudrapatna has the unique record of producing the most number of Carnatic musicians in the country - about 167 famous Carnatic musicians have come from this village and their photos can be seen on the wall of this temple.

Six hundred years ago, Sanketi Iyers from Shenkottai in Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu) migrated - one group settled down on the banks of river Cauvery at Hyagreevapura (now Rudrapatna) and continued their tryst with music. Even to this day there’s an annual music festival which lasts for two days and the deep rooted musicians take part in this festival.
