The presentation of the Drama was excellent in all respects, acting, dialogues, dances, expressions, stage setting , lighting, scene changing etc.
The story about 10th century Maharaja of Malla, Okaka, and his wife. Maharani Sheelavathi.
Okaka was made Maharaja at his young age, as his parents died. He married later though he was impotent due to some disease at his childhood. After 5 years of marriage, he didn't have any children.
The King's court consisting of Amatya (Minister), Senadhipathi, Purohit (Priest) and Vaidya (Doctor) decides the Maharani should become "DharmaNati" for one night.
The Maharaja was furious, though from the interest of Kingdom and people, he had agree for Sheelavathi to be with another man for on night, so that the Rajya will have "Uttaradhikaari" (Heir for the throne).
Maharani chooses her former boyfriend for one night and enjoys the experience, which she could not have with her husband.
Then come the feelings, aspirations, lust and the woman's emotions of not having the experience with the man.
She blames the Man, society, rules and in general, the whole system.
The emotions, helplessness, apathy, anger of the man enacted beautifully and also the experience, lack of satisfaction, empathy and the frustration of the women, well presented.
After the show, we with actor and Director. Shwetha Srinivas and Asif Kshatriya.
From Rangaratha:
The plot of the play Dharmanati, moves around the lives of a king who is impotent and a queen who is still a virgin. The play opens with a symbolic Sufi Whirling depicting the cosmic connection of every soul. As the play unfolds, the King & the Queen are seen living in happy times. After spending five years in marriage, now they are facing the questions of a child, the heir of the vast Malla kingdom. Since the king is impotent, the queen is now forced to spend one night with a man of her choice and conceive. After a lot of argument with the king and her own morals, the Queen finally chooses the man with whom she spends her first night. The king on the other hand is furious and broken with the queen’s decision to follow the rules. The queen now plays an active role where she finds herself with a long awaited answers. The play hints at female sexuality and nuptial bonds that cage a woman ignoring her individuality. The play has an open ending. The loud emotional outrages of the king and the fecundity of the queen enchant the theatre and spell bound the audience. The other characters are very potential and fluid.
Well done the team "RANGA RATHA" and Best wishes.
