In memory of great Dr. Kota Shivarama Karantha, Jnana Peeta Award recipient, Kadala Theerada Bhargava, Karnataka Kala Darshini has organized "SHIVARAMA KARANTHA UTSAVA 2019" .
As part of evening's program, Yakshagana Ballet, "CHITRANGADHE" was presented, originally conceived and directed by Dr. K. Shivarama Karantha himself, some years ago. The new concept of old Yakshagana, with additional accompanying musicians with saxophone, violin and drum, and no dialogues and story telling by artists. Slightly different costumes were designed. also dance and expressions.
The current performance was directed by Sri Sudhir Kodavoor from Udupi with his team of artists.
The part of the story is from MahaBharatha, where Arjuna team goes out for expansion of his empire for AshwaMedha yaaga. He reaches empire of Queen Pramila and falls in love with her and marries.
Further he proceeds to empire of Chitrangadhe, where he was killed by Babruvahana, his son from Chitrangade. Uloopi, daughter of SamudraRaja, also wife of Arjuna, and Krishna, the Lord enters and makes him alive again and all are happy.
The performance of the artists was superb, the singing by Bhagavatharu, Sudhir Rao Kodavoor himself was excellent. The accompanying musicians also performed very well.
On the whole, it was an excellent presentation of Yakshagana Ballet.
