Kolar, Karnataka
Accompanying us was Suresh Cukkemane and his wife Usha, came from Mysuru for weekend visit.
Kolar is about 68 km from Bengaluru on a good road. We left from home after breakfast at 8.30am and it was an hour half hour drive. Our first stop was Someshwara Temple, right in the centre of the town.
The temple was built by Cholas in 11th Century, later expanded by VijayaNagara Empire, with the beauty of Dravidian Architecture. The huge Gopura at the entrance stands the testimony of Cholas. The temple has heavy prakaras with Kalyana mantapa, Mukha mantapa with massive pillars, Vasantha mantapa and a shrine for Goddess Parvathi Devi.
The door frame of this magnificient temple is carved in VijayaNagara Style with DwaraPalakas (Guards). There is a granite bull carved at the entrance.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped in the name o Someshwara. Elephants are depicted frolicking, jumping, fighting and even hopping over Lingas in the basement.
Even if some one is atheist, they could visit the temple to admire the architectural and artist amalgamation of depicted in the temple.
After about an hour and half visit, we left wondering the talent of people in those days.
