UPANAYANA - RAKESH S/O SRINIVASAN

Upanayana or Brahmopadesha is sacred thread (Yajnopaveetha) ceremony, one of traditional samskara of Sanathana Dharma.

RAKESH

The ceremony varies from place to place. In Tamilandu, it is done in two parts.

UDAKA SHANTHI POOJA: Thur, 16th June 7 pm

We had the previlege of attending Udaka Shanthi Pooja, as part of Upanayana of Rakesh, S/O Sreenivasan,Bhuvaneshwari at their apartment  (1008, Bodhighai Block) at Anupuraam Township of Atomic Energy Commission, Kalpakkam. 

Udaka Shanthi Pooja is ritual performed  on auspicious ocassion like Upanayana, Marrige, Gruhapravesha etc. Water in a vessel gets purified and becomes auspicious through chanting of Mantras and invitaion of Lord Varuna and various Gods and Goddesses.

The holy water was poured on the boy as abhisheka.

This procedure is normally not done in our place for Upanayana.

 

A team of six Shashtrigal (Purohiths) sit aroung the decorated vessel placed over rice and mantras chanted for about 45 minutes. Before that Ganapathi pooja and aarthi was performed. For Abhisheka, the boy seated in Balcony, water poured over his head chanting Mantras. At the end of the ceremony, which lasted about 3 hours, dinner was served.

Another speciality is food, various items, prepared by caterer, is served by the relatives and friends, both male and female members.

UPANAYANA CEREMONY: Fri. 17th June 2022

The muhurthafor upanayana was at 7 am at Mahaveer Kalyana Mantapa at Kalpakkam, a distance of 13 km. All relations, friends started from the towship at 5 am, a TT was arranged.

The team of Shashtrigal, were already present on the stage at the hall, with required items for the ritual. After Ganesha Pooja, Naandi, Chavala and Anna Prashana, Thread ceremony was performed in the presence of relatives, young and old.

BRAHMOPADESHA

There was breakfast in between, idli, sambar etc

Later after homa and more rituals, Brahmopadesha was performed under a covered white sheet by the father.

Aarthi was performed and the presentaion of UDUGORE (ಉಡುಗೊರೆ) (presents) by  relatives and friends.

s the whole whole proces finished by 9.30 am, all waited for lunch at 1 pm.

Procedure vary from place to place, where as we have only two puroiths performing the whole ritual. We had the opportunity to witness the different procedure.
