Vivekananda Rock Memorial was built in 1970 by RamaKrishna Mission to pay tribute to the profound Swami Vivekananda. The rock is situated around 500 metres from southern most tip.
There is a ship administration who organize launch boats to and from the shoreline. The launch can carry more than 100 people and the duration is just 10 minutes to the rock.
Swami Vivekananda swam to the rock, stayed there for three days for meditation, enlightenment and mull over past, present and future. It is believed that he accomplished edification the rock, changimg him into a reformer and truth seeker.
There is heavy rush in the morning to get into the launch, queue extending very long for normal ticket of Rs 35/- per person, but a special ticket is available for Rs 170.00 per person.
People spend about half an hour to one hour, the statue is placed inside the mandapam, where Swami got his Enlightenment.
There are bookshops and gift shops on the rock.
The opening hours are 8 am to 4 pm.
There is also a huge statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar on another rock, where people are not permitted. The statue is 133 feet sculpture of the Tamil poet and Philosopher, Thiruvalluvar, author of Thirukkural. It was unveiled on 1st January 2000.
