Varanga, near Hebri, Udupi Taluk, Karnataka.
Varanga is a small village near Hebri (Distance 10Km), which has a beautiful KERE BASADI. Kere means Lake and Basadi means Jain Temple.
Kere Basadi, a square shaped pond or lake. built during 13th Century, built by Jakala Mahadevi, wife of Alupa Kulashekara (1060 -1120). Basadi is in the middle of pond, can be reached only by boat, is recently renovated.
Varanga stands out with its mystical beauty as it is surrounded by hills and greenery. The boat trip is about 10 minutes and the temple has Lord Neminatha as deity, 22nd Tirthankara, in Padmasana position on Kamala Peeta, and surrounding is serene, scenic beauty and pleasant weather.
The lake has fresh water and is rich in aquatic life with water lilies, fresh water turtles, fish and water snakes. We even saw a snake catching a fish in the water.
