After lunch at downtown SiemReap, we proceeded to TonleSap Lake, a distance of 15 km.
It's largest freshwater lake in South east Asia, and an attached river 120 km long TonleSap river, connects the lake to Mekong river. The lake's size, length and water volume varies considerably over the course of a year from an area of 2500 sq.km to 16000 sq.km.
It is one of the most varied and productive ecosystems the region has always been of central importance to Cambodia. It directly and indirectly affects the livelihood of large number of a predominantly rural population.
We went on a boat cruise for half hour and reached up to a floating shopping mall, spent 15-20 minutes and returned. The highlight of the cruise is the large number of floating houses on the river on the sides, which include grocery shop, school, church, hospital and repair shops etc. They have a small boat near each floating house for their mobility.
The living there are mostly fishermen and their family. It's amazing how people get used to living in such comforts, in spite of advancement of science and technology.
On our return, we could see the beautiful sun set in west and it was a real treat to the eyes.
